- Zoid: Redler

Basic Overview

Pilot(s): None  (Shadow? Does that count?)
Allegiance: Imperial Army

The Redler is one of the first Imperial flying Zoids seen. It's a small dragon-type unit that is usually hanging close to the palace, and serves as the Emperor's royal escort. Oddly enough, this aerial Zoid has little to no weapons. While most are seen "firing", technically, statistically, it's equipped with purely close range equipment until later variations happen to remedy this. The Standard issue of the Guylos Imperial Army is purple.

History

Search Effort, Episode 22

Numerous Redlers were sent out searching for the Prince Rudolph. They'd been dispatched by Prozen to feign concern for the young emperor-to-be, but at the same time he was ordering Raven and his unknown Zoid, the Geno Saurer to shoot them down any time he found them.

Raven, Episode 42

After the fall of Raven's Geno Saurer he wandered in a seeming trance. When he decided to invade an Imperial Army base, Shadow caught a Redler that'd been flying over the area and flew it directly into the center of the base. The resulting explosion distracted the guards, giving Raven time to steal a Dark Horn DVS.

Prisoner Escort, Episode 47

When Raven was finally captured by the Empire, he was planned to be transported to a more secure location via a two-seater Redler. After the Zoid took off he kicked in the console, causing it to crash.

- Redler BGS (Bandit Gang Spec.)

Organoid Theft Attempt, Episode 2

The Redler BGS is only seen as a Zoid piloted by Viola of the Desert Arcobaleno Gang, and in this case accompanied the rest of the group to try and capture Bang Freiheit's Organoid. They took his sister Maria hostage to ensure their success, but when Bang attacked with his Shield Liger Viola was quick to counter with her Redler's tail blade. Unfortunately the Liger discovered it still had missiles, so her Zoid was injured and had to retreat.

Attempt Two, Episode 4

Their second attempt came when they tracked the group to a village known to be bullied by bandits. This time, Viola handled the unexpected opponent Irvine and his Command Wolf. She chased the Zoid nimbly through the canyons until it whipped around and surprised her by pouncing on the Redler, causing her to crash.

Attemp Three, Episode 8

One final effort was made to capture Sieg, again kidnapping members of the group. This time Viola focused on keeping Irvine busy while Rosso fought with Bang, but when the Empire started approaching, intending to arrest Rosso, they had to call it off.

Battle of Mt. Iselina, Episode 11

After Rosso disbanded the Desert Arcobaleno Gang and got arrested, Viola traveled with Giallo, blaming Bang for what'd happened. She pursued them to Mt. Iselina, where rumors were abound of monsters in the fog. In reality these were tricks of light created by the complex canyons of the mountain. She intended to use these to kill Bang and his Shield Liger, but was betrayed by her own sister. Unaware that it was Viola piloting the Shield Liger, she used a solar panel to reflect light into the fog, causing it to bounce off the real Redler and give away her location.

Kidnapping of the Crowned Prince, Episode 19

Eventually part of the gang worked together to bust Rosso out of prison. Viola used her Redler has an escape vehicle and took Rosso back to their hideout. After they realized they were being trailed by a different group, Metternich and his people, they tricked them into thinking they had succeeded in killing the remaining gang members. Viola then took her Redler and shot down the three Command Wolves that they group had been planning to use to frame the Republic for Rudolph's assassination. Rosso and Viola succeeded in kidnapping the crowned prince before Metternich could.

Backing Up The Iron Kong, Episode 20

Originally, they intended to sell Rudolph back to Metternich's group for the ransom money. Once Rosso realized that they intended to kill the boy, however, his conscience got the best of him. He followed the original plan and met them. He accepted the money and sent Rudolph walking towards them, but then threw the suitcase, which he correctly guessed would have a bomb in it, distracting the group. When the bomb exploded he snatched Rudolph and fled through the smoke, covered by Viola and her Redler, who shot not just at Metternichs group to keep them back, but also landed some sweeping fire on their Dark Horns.

Geno Saurer, Episode 21

Viola went out looking for Rudolph after they lost track of him in the woods. By then he'd met up with Bang and their group, but almost as soon as she found him, her Redler was shot down by Raven's Geno Saurer. This was the last time her Redler would be seen.

Additional Equipment Information

- Tail Blade

Included here since most anime Redlers don't use their tail blades. These blades tuck perfectly into the tail when not in use, then snap upwards, for the Redler to slice enemies as it rolls past them.

- Muzzle Guns*

Two gun barrels are installed to the Redler's jaw. In most other Zoids media these weapons don't exist, so this is unique to the anime.

Black Redler Attack, Episode 45

Redler BCs were stationed at Dragon Head Base and deployed to fend off a Black Redler attack. The attack turned out to be a distraction for two of the group's members sneaking in to steak the still-in-development Storm Sworder Stealth.

The Geno Breaker, Episode 47

Redler BCs were at the scene when Raven's Geno Saurer was expected to emerge from its evolutionary cocoon. They would've allegedly been part of the attack. Another crashed soon after the attack.

Investigation, Episode 53

Two Redler BCs were sent to investigate a report about a mysterious vessel that had disappeared off the coast. The Guardian Force was anticipating an assassination attempt in Emperor Rudolph at the Guylos Grand Prix, so the report was of particular interest. They discovered a camouflaged boat with a customized Gun Sniper on board, and destroyed it in spite of not landing a direct hit. The sniper had already escaped the vessel, however, and detonated it himself during the attack to make it seem like he hadn't expected their arrival.

Additional Equipment Information

- Beam Cannons

These large weapons are positioned on the Redler's wings, facing dead ahead. They don't see use in the show, unfortunately.

- Infrared Camera

The Redler BCs were seen at one point to have infrared, allowing them to detect Zoids even if they were hidden by optical stealth.

- Notable Facts

  • According to the old MBS website, the Black Redler's armor is as strong as the Dark Horn's.

History

Ebenei Air Base, Episode 29, Mueller, Ralph

After a test battle against Karl Schwarz and his Saber Tiger he stopped to discuss things with the base commander, Ralph. He learned that Prozen contributed significantly to Ebenei Air Base, bolstering their count of only a couple Redlers to almost forty. Even still, it was a surprise to him when the so-called imposter Rudolph was in the area, and after learning it was actually the young prince, Ralph still ordered to deploy the Black Redlers. They chased down the Blade Liger, also firing at Bang's Organoid, Sieg, preventing him from fusing to the Zoid. When Sieg was downed, the Blade Liger stood to fight. The battle was taken over by the Republic's new state-of-the-art aerial Zoids, the Storm Sworders. They defeated all of the Black Redlers pursuing the Blade Liger.

McMahon's Mansion, Episode 30

Black Redlers were rolled out to attack McMahon's mansion when it was believed he was harboring Rudolph. They were defeated by Rosso and Viola's Storm Sworders.

The Three Guards, Episode 31, Mueller, Ralph

Ralph and Mueller drew the Three Guards, three retired former elite Saber Tiger pilots into the hunt for Rudolph. They agreed on the condition that they be allowed to fight the imposters one on one. While Ralph agreed, he quickly renegged on this once the Saber Tigers had been defeated. In response, the Three Guards themselves shot down the Black Redlers.

Assassination Attempt, Episode 34

Ralph made one final bid to get rid of Rudolph when he was being transported to Guygalos to interrupt Prozen's coronation. He attacked the Storm Sworders that were transferring him, but Rosso ended up cutting off the head of his Black Redler.

Theft, Episode 45

When Ralph and Mueller stole the Storm Sworder Stealth units from the Republican Army, they weren't aware that the Zoids didn't yet have their combat data installed. This required them to equip basic Redler munitions unless they came back for the remaining data, but by then the Republic would be waiting. They'd originally had the support of Black Redlers during the operation, but decided to strike them down so that they wouldn't give away the location of the Storm Sworders.

The Gravity Cannon, Episode 61

Black Redlers were used in a targeted assault on the development site of the Gravity Cannon. They were once again downed by Rosso and Viola's Storm Sworders.

The Death Saurer, Episode 67

Countless Black Redlers poured out of the Whale Kings when the Death Saurer awoke in Eveopolis. They tried bombing the reawakened Zoid, but their weapons did no damage at all.

Additional Equipment Information

- Air-To-Air Cannon

The depiction of these guns varies a bit, but they're installed to either side of the face. While the anime depicts them with a high rate of fire, the introductory article of CoroCoro mentions that they don't fire continuously, but have long range and high accuracy.

- Missiles *

Though not specifically mentioned in its official equipment list, the Black Redler is regularly depicted dropping missiles from its belly. It seems to carry three of these on board, from what we've seen in the show.

- Missile Pods

While the Redler is mainly featured using its belly missiles, there's also two large Missile Pods under the wings, which appear to have 7 chambers each. They don't seem to get used in the show, however.

- Twin Blades

The Black Redler has multiple blades installed to its tail in addition to the typical Variable Laser Blade. Two large ones on the top are said to be suitable for close-range combat but also serve to give the Zoid more stability while firing its weapons. There are also two smaller blades (likely for stability purposes given how tiny they are) on the underside of the tail.

- Thrusters*

Though not given a specific name, what appears to be three thrusters are tucked into the interior of the armor on each leg.
